(NLDO) - Containing many intact items, the "ghost ship" reveals a very busy trade route 11-12 centuries ago.

Recent excavations as part of the Heritage for the Future project of the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism have led to the discovery of a "ghost ship" buried offshore, near the coast of Antalya.

According to Heritage Daily, the ship sank at a depth of about 45-50 meters and preliminary tests showed that it dates back to the 9th or 10th century, making it 1,100-1,200 years old.

This "ghost ship" belonged to the Philistines, an ancient people who lived in the area, and was a merchant ship.

What is special is that even though the ship had an accident and was buried for more than a thousand years, inside the ship there are still many intact ceramic jars, containing the cargo it carried on its fateful voyage: Olive oil.

These ceramic vessels also have the general shape of the amphora that was common in many civilizations of that period, but still have their own characteristics, depending on the region they originated from.

So these jars led archaeologists to the place where the "ghost ship" originated: the Gaza Strip.

The now conflict-ridden region was a prosperous place at the time the "ghost ship" was operating, thanks to its thriving olive oil industry.

Further evidence of this is that some olive seeds remain in some of the jars.

According to Professor Hakan Öniz from the Faculty of Fine Arts of Akdeniz University (Türkiye), olives have also been the staple food of sailors in the Mediterranean region for 5,000 years of history.

The discovery of the shipwreck is providing archaeologists with new insights into ancient maritime trade links in the Mediterranean, as well as the importance of olives during sea voyages, according to Turkey's Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
