Promoting the effectiveness of irrigation systems

The irrigation system in Tay Ninh province plays a particularly important role in ensuring water security, serving agricultural and industrial production, providing domestic water and preventing natural disasters. Among them, many large-scale projects have been and are showing remarkable effectiveness, contributing to promoting the socio-economic development of the locality and neighboring areas.

Notable among them is Dau Tieng Reservoir, a particularly important irrigation project related to national security according to Decision No. 1502/QD-TTg, dated December 2, 2024 and included in the List of special dams and irrigation reservoirs according to Decision No. 124/QD-TTg, dated January 24, 2019 of the Prime Minister. With a capacity of up to 1.58 billion cubic meters, the reservoir not only ensures irrigation water for agricultural production but also serves industry, daily life and other services for three localities including Tay Ninh, Dong Nai and Ho Chi Minh City.

To effectively exploit water resources from Dau Tieng Lake, the irrigation canal system has been invested synchronously, including two main routes with a total length of 73.675km, currently supplying water to 33,530ha/47,874ha of designed area, reaching 70.01%. Of which, the main West canal is 38.975km long, with a design flow of 93m3 /s, irrigating 17,430ha/22,000ha, reaching 79.23%. In addition, this route also supplies industrial water and domestic water through Tay Ninh Water Supply and Drainage Joint Stock Company with a flow of about 20,000m3 /day/night. The 34.7km long East Main Canal also has a design flow of 93m3 /s, irrigating 16,100ha/25,874ha, reaching 62.22%, at the same time, taking on the role of supplying domestic water with a capacity of up to 150,000m3 /day/night.

Along with the irrigation canal system, drainage canals are also invested in a systematic manner to ensure effective drainage. The drainage canal system consists of 4 routes, with a total length of 22.087km, including Phuoc Hoi - Ben Dinh drainage canal, drainage canal after the dry discharge sluice at K1+677 of the East main canal, drainage canal T3 at K13+042 of the West main canal and drainage canal after the auxiliary dam. The dike system protects residential areas, of which the level III dike is 9,298m long, including the protection line of Tan Hung town (old) with a length of 4,371m and the protection line of Vinh Hung town (old) with a length of 9,298m.

In addition to the projects managed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment , Tay Ninh also operates many important irrigation projects managed by the Provincial People's Committee. Notably, the Tan Hung main canal system is 29.89 km long (of which 4.508 km has been solidified), with a design flow of 12.8 m3 /s, irrigating 6,858 ha/10,701 ha, reaching 64.09%. The Tan Bien main canal system is 23.018 km long, with a design flow of 13.5 m3/s, but the irrigation efficiency is still low, reaching only 1,687.77 ha/6,407 ha, equivalent to 16.23%.

In addition, the Duc Hoa irrigation canal system is large in scale, with a total length of 185.85 km, including a main canal of 3.66 km, a level I canal of 31.766 km, a level II and over-level canal of 62.31 km, and a level III canal and branches of 88.11 km. This is an important canal serving the agricultural and industrial development area in the south of the province.

Notably, the self-flowing irrigation system serving the Tan Chau sugarcane raw material area is effectively supplying water to 2,752.96 hectares/crop, reaching 75.01%, and at the same time supplying industrial water to the Tan Chau Tapioca Starch Factory of Quang Ngai Agricultural Products and Foodstuff Joint Stock Company, with a capacity of 1,500 m³/day/night.

Tha La Reservoir, a large reservoir with a capacity of about 27.5 million m3 , designed to irrigate 3,670 hectares, continues to be a strategic water source for the western region of the province.

Currently, the province has 12 pumping stations, 25 level IV dykes with a total length of 53.651km, along with a system of irrigation canals at all levels including 1,765 routes with a total length of 1,743.12km; 196 canals with a length of 2,515.106km; a drainage canal system with 215 routes with a length of 576.146km and 43 regulating culverts. The irrigation infrastructure system is increasingly being expanded and upgraded, making an important contribution to regulating and distributing water reasonably, minimizing damage caused by drought and flooding, while creating conditions to promote sustainable development of agricultural, industrial and urban production areas in Tay Ninh province./.
