Vietnamese director's film 'causes a fever' on Netflix

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên04/02/2025

The 6-episode film Devil's Restaurant by director Ham Tran quickly reached the top 1 on the Netflix platform after being exclusively broadcast since January 26. The film attracted the attention of the audience with a topic that is not new but is exploited in a haunting way: when people trade their souls to satisfy their deepest desires.

Set in a mysterious restaurant run by a strange chef (Le Quoc Nam), Devil's Restaurant tells the stories of different diners, each with different desires. They are served special dishes that have the ability to make their wishes come true. But everything has a price and the price is not cheap.

The film is divided into 6 episodes, each focusing on an aspect of the five psychological poisons according to Buddhist philosophy: greed, anger, ignorance, pride, doubt; and the final episode talks about karma - the inevitable consequences of wrong choices. From small stories, the film evokes a great lesson about cause and effect: no demon forces us to commit crimes, it is human greed and desire that causes tragedy.

The interesting thing about the film is that there is no real demon that appears or manipulates the characters. Instead, they are the ones who bring tragedy upon themselves. The restaurant owner is just an observer, someone who gives them opportunities but does not decide for them. This makes the film not only visually terrifying but also philosophically profound.

The Devil's Restaurant is a Buddhist horror film that deals with greed, anger, ignorance...

One of the reasons why Devil's Diner is highly appreciated is the non-linear storytelling, when each episode is a separate story but connected to each other through the restaurant owner character. This way of leading creates the feeling of a collection of horror short stories, helping the film to be diverse while maintaining the audience's curiosity through each episode.

In addition, instead of using cheap scares, director Ham Tran chose to build fear slowly, through the psychological developments of the characters. The tension in the film does not come from ghosts, but from the wrong choices of people. When tragedy occurs, the audience not only feels scared but also haunted by the reality of the stories being told.

Leading the entire story is the restaurant owner. Not exactly a villain, not exactly a good person, this character is like a neutral observer, witnessing and listening to the customers' feelings. With a mysterious demeanor, a smile that is half friendly and half scary, Le Quoc Nam has excellently portrayed an unpredictable character, making the audience unable to take their eyes off him every time he appears. Besides, actors such as Kieu Trinh, Vo Tan Phat, Sy Toan, Le Huynh... all show the unique colors of each character.

Devil's Diner is #1 on Netflix

However, it can be seen that Devil's Restaurant still has some imperfect points, such as some segments in the film that make viewers feel a lack of surprise and explosion because it is easy to guess the plot and the next developments. In addition, the dialogue is sometimes not really natural. However, compared to the whole, these minus points do not reduce the appeal of the film.

More than just an entertaining horror series, The Devil's Diner is a work steeped in philosophy, evoking big questions about morality, humanity, and the price of greed. With its unique storytelling, impressive acting by a talented cast, and haunting, ghostly atmosphere, the film is completely worthy of the title of Netflix's "fever" in early 2025.
