Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen announced: "Hungary is supporting Israel on the international stage. In the coming weeks, Hungary will be the first EU country to announce the transfer of its embassy to Jerusalem."

The announcement came after a meeting between Foreign Minister Cohen and his Hungarian counterpart Peter Sziijarto as the Jewish state's diplomat visited the European country.

From May 29 to June 1, Mr. Eli Cohen visited four European countries: Croatia, Slovakia, Hungary, and Austria.

Meanwhile, the Israeli Prime Minister's Office announced that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had a phone call to congratulate Paraguayan President-elect Santiago Pena and received a promise to move the South American country's embassy to Jerusalem.

The statement said Netanyahu and Pena pledged to strengthen bilateral ties and agreed to meet soon to discuss economic cooperation. The Israeli prime minister also appreciated Pena's commitment to moving the embassy.

In April, speaking to AFP before Paraguay's presidential election, Mr. Pena said: "The State of Israel declares Jerusalem as its capital. The seat of the National Assembly is in Jerusalem. So we should not ask where they put their capital."

After the US and Guatemala, Paraguay became the third country to move its embassy to Jerusalem in 2018. However, the move was reversed a few months later, when then-Paraguayan President Mario Abdo Benítez took office.
