The resolution is largely symbolic, as implementation will be up to President Cyril Ramaphosa's administration. A presidential spokesman said Ramaphosa "takes note and appreciates" the South African parliament's guidance on the country's diplomatic relations with Israel.

“The president and the cabinet are discussing this issue, which remains the responsibility of the national executive,” the spokesman said.

Mr Ramaphosa and senior South African foreign ministry officials have been critical of Israel’s military operations in the Gaza Strip. On Monday, the Israeli ambassador in Pretoria was recalled to Tel Aviv for consultations ahead of the vote.

South Africa has supported a two-state solution for decades, likening the plight of Palestinians to that of blacks during the apartheid era, a comparison Israel vehemently denies.
