The South Korean National Assembly today, December 27, passed a motion to impeach Acting President Han Duck-soo, proposed by the opposition Democratic Party, according to AFP.

Earlier, South Korean National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik said today, December 27, that if only half of the lawmakers vote in favor, the impeachment motion against acting President Han Duck-soo would be passed, according to Reuters.

The motion to impeach Mr. Han was passed unanimously in a vote with 192 votes in favor and no votes against, marking the first time an acting president has been impeached by the National Assembly, according to Yonhap.

As the vote began, lawmakers from the ruling People's Power Party protested in front of parliament, according to AFP.

Earlier, Yonhap reported that if the impeachment motion is passed, Mr. Han's duties will be suspended and South Korean Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok, who is also deputy prime minister in charge of economic affairs, will assume the role of acting president.

This is the first time in South Korea's constitutional history that a motion to impeach an acting president has been put to a vote in the National Assembly.

The impeachment motion came shortly after Mr Han said he would not appoint Constitutional Court judges until the parties reached a political agreement.

The opposition-controlled National Assembly voted on December 26 to approve the nomination of three judges, but Han is still waiting for his formal appointment. Among them are Ma Eun-hyuk and Jeong Gye-seon, nominated by the Democratic Party, and Cho Han-chang, nominated by the ruling People's Power Party.

The appointment will give the Constitutional Court a full slate of nine judges for the impeachment trial of President Yoon Suk Yeol, who declared martial law on December 3. By law, at least six of the nine judges need to vote in favor for the trial to proceed.
