Rumors that Mr. Trump wants to overturn the sentence in New York after favorable verdict

Hours after the US Supreme Court issued a symbolic ruling that Donald Trump has immunity from criminal prosecution for his actions to overturn the 2020 election results - when he was president - the former leader called for the dismissal of his case in New York, which has been convicted and is awaiting sentencing, according to ABC News. Many US media outlets also cited sources confirming this information.

Mr. Trump campaigned in Chesapeake City, Virginia on June 28.

The US Supreme Court ruled 6-3 on June 30 that Mr. Trump enjoys absolute immunity from criminal prosecution for his official actions as president. The ruling was made in connection with the prosecution of Mr. Trump in Washington DC on charges of conspiring to overturn the results of the 2020 election by spreading false claims of election fraud and obstructing the collection, counting and certification of election results.

On July 1, Mr. Trump’s lawyers filed a petition with Judge Juan Merchan in New York, who presided over the former president’s trial for falsifying business records to cover up hush money payments to an adult film star, urging the judge to overturn his conviction in May because the evidence presented to the jury during the trial should be protected by immunity.

Mr. Trump complained that he could not buy bacon because it was too expensive.

Before the New York case entered the trial stage, Mr. Trump's side made a last-minute effort to delay the case, arguing that some evidence that prosecutors could present in court, such as online posts while he was president, was protected under immunity from prosecution.

Judge Merchan did not address the merits of this argument at that time, but simply stated that Mr. Trump's offer was made too late to be accepted and decided to start a trial.

In a new move on July 1, Mr. Trump’s lawyers urged the judge to postpone the sentencing hearing scheduled for July 11. Mr. Trump was found guilty on 34 charges and could face confinement or prison time. He said he would appeal.

In addition, he also said that the immunity from prosecution applies to all three remaining criminal cases against him, which have not yet reached the trial stage and may have new developments after the Supreme Court's ruling.
