Guide Juan Malan captured the strange scene between a wildebeest and a lioness at the Lapalala Wilderness Reserve in Limpopo, South Africa, Latest Sightings reported on October 4. While driving north of the reserve, Malan and his group of visitors came across a lone lioness hiding in the bushes. She carefully observed the open grass, hoping to find an opportunity to hunt, even though there was no animal in sight at the time.
A few hours later, when they returned to the same spot, the scene had changed completely. A herd of wildebeest was grazing leisurely in the grasslands, and among them was a female wildebeest with a broken hind leg who was struggling to keep up with the rest of the herd. The lioness had ambushed her from a distance and was running at full speed towards her prey. However, when the lioness was about to pounce, she was confused because the wildebeest had stood still instead of running away. The lioness took a defensive stance, belly down, waiting.
The wildebeest imitated the lioness by crouching down, looking as if it was about to fall asleep. But that was how the wildebeest fought. But crouching low to the ground was the biggest mistake a wildebeest could make. The lioness saw her opportunity to attack and pounced. She successfully brought down the wounded wildebeest. With her powerful jaws, she finished off her prey with a fatal bite to the throat. She then dragged the carcass into the thick grass, finding a shady and secluded spot. The lioness called out to her hidden cubs and shared her meal with them.
The African lion (Panthera leo) is found mainly in sub-Saharan Africa. It is the only cat species in the world that lives in prides. Female lions are the main hunters, preying on antelopes, zebras, wildebeests and other animals. Male lions defend the territory of the pride.
