Common mistakes that damage the kidneys

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên14/06/2024

Nearly 4,600 people are estimated to be diagnosed with kidney cancer by 2023, and the average age at diagnosis is 65, according to the Hindustan Times .

Smokers are twice as likely to develop kidney cancer as non-smokers. Even if you don’t smoke, drink alcohol, or have unhealthy lifestyle habits like poor diet and lack of exercise, you are still at high risk of developing kidney cancer as you get older.

Risk of kidney cancer is twice that of non-smokers

The most common type of kidney cancer is renal cell carcinoma (RCC), which accounts for about 90% of cases.

“Although kidney cancer may not have obvious symptoms in the early stages, it can progress rapidly if left untreated, causing serious health problems,” said Raghunath SK, a urologist in India.

Here are common mistakes to avoid to protect your kidneys, according to Raghunath SK.

Unbalanced diet

Diet plays an important role in protecting kidney health. You should prioritize nutrient-rich foods such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, while limiting processed meats, soft drinks, and unhealthy fats. This diet provides essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants for efficient kidney function and reduces the risk of kidney cancer.

Overweight

Weight control through regular exercise and a healthy diet is key to protecting kidney health. Being overweight puts pressure on the kidneys, increasing the risk of kidney disease and cancer.

Eat a variety of nutritious foods in appropriate portions to maintain a healthy weight and overall health.

Drink less water

Drinking enough water helps your kidneys function properly and flushes out toxic waste from your body. You need to drink at least 2 liters to maintain optimal kidney health. Pale yellow urine indicates that your body is well hydrated.

Smoking and drinking

Smoking and alcohol abuse are habits that are dangerous to the kidneys and increase the risk of cancer. Quitting smoking and limiting alcohol are practical ways to protect kidney health.

No blood pressure check

Over time, high blood pressure can damage your kidneys, increasing your risk of kidney disease and kidney cancer. Therefore, it is important to monitor your blood pressure regularly and follow a healthy lifestyle by eating a balanced diet, exercising, and reducing stress.

High blood sugar

Diabetics are at increased risk of kidney disease and kidney cancer due to high blood sugar. Therefore, strict control of blood sugar is extremely important.

Apply a reasonable diet, limit starch, and combine with regular exercise to maintain stable blood sugar.

Painkiller abuse

Some over-the-counter pain relievers can be harmful to your kidneys if taken in excess. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) should be used sparingly and under the guidance of a doctor.

Instead of relying on pain medications, you may want to consider other pain relief methods such as physical therapy, heat therapy, or acupuncture.
