Samsung loses ground as TSMC wins new Snapdragon manufacturing contract

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên30/12/2024

According to TechSpot , Samsung Foundry has once again failed to win a contract from Qualcomm to manufacture its latest flagship mobile processor, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 2. This is a new setback in the fierce competition between Samsung and TSMC, as TSMC continues to assert its leadership by winning all contracts to manufacture this new chip.

The decision comes at a critical time for Samsung Foundry, as the company faces challenges with low production success rates. However, Samsung has made some significant progress, such as stabilizing its 3nm chip manufacturing process and aiming to develop 2nm and 1.4nm chips by 2027.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 is expected to have a 20% increase in power and be manufactured under TSMC's N3P process.

Still, Qualcomm’s choice to work exclusively with TSMC for the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 2 reflects the harsh realities of the semiconductor industry. TSMC, with its track record of reliability and stability, has a clear advantage over its competitors. This is especially important given that Snapdragon is a widely used chip line in high-end smartphones around the world.

Losing this contract doesn’t mean Samsung Foundry has to give up on its ambitions. Samsung is expected to continue its efforts to win the contract to produce the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 3 when the chip begins development.

At the same time, the news that the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 2 will significantly increase in price has posed a difficult problem for Samsung's smartphone business. The higher cost of phone processors can increase the price of high-end products such as the Galaxy series, putting great pressure on price competitiveness.

One potential solution is to revive its in-house Exynos chip line for future Galaxy devices, such as the Galaxy S26 series. This could help Samsung reduce its reliance on Snapdragon and better control costs. Samsung will need to consider different strategies to stay competitive in the market, including improving its in-house chip production capacity or partnering with other chip suppliers. This will be a difficult problem for both Samsung's semiconductor and smartphone businesses in the coming time.
