Phong Chau bridge collapses in Phu Tho, witnesses shocked

On the morning of September 9, Mr. Tran Hoai Giang - Director of the Department of Transport of Phu Tho province confirmed to VietNamNet that due to the impact of floods, Phong Chau bridge had just collapsed.

“I am on my way to the scene, currently the authorities have organized traffic flow to ensure safety for the people. The units are currently compiling statistics of the current situation and will have a specific report,” Mr. Giang informed.

A representative of the Vietnam Road Administration said that they have received information about the incident and have requested the department to report it immediately. Currently, the functional units are handling the matter urgently.

Mr. Trieu Ngoc Thu (witness) said: “At around 10am this morning, I had to cross Phong Chau bridge. When I got close to the bridge, there were about 3 other cars in front of my car. At that time, the bridge shook and collapsed into the river. The incident happened very quickly, in just about 1 minute the bridge collapsed and the river water swept it away.”

Phong Chau Bridge crosses the Red River on Highway 32C, connecting Lam Thao and Tam Nong districts (Phu Tho). The bridge is built with a steel structure, nearly 380m long. The project was inaugurated on July 28, 1995.

In 2013, Phong Chau Bridge was repaired. In September 2019, Phu Tho issued an order banning vehicles weighing 18 tons or more from crossing this bridge.
