Yonhap news agency quoted the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff as saying that the country is conducting research, but did not give further details.
Meanwhile, according to the Japan Coast Guard, it appears the launch failed and the North Korean object fell outside Japan's exclusive economic zone, about 370km off the country's coast, without causing any damage.
The launch came a day after North Korea condemned the US for sending a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier to South Korea, warning of "strong deterrent measures" against the "provocative act".
The US aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt docked in Busan, southeastern South Korea, on June 22, as the two allies and Japan plan to conduct a trilateral exercise called Freedom Edge in late June.
This is the first time the USS Theodore Roosevelt has docked in South Korea and also marks the first time a US aircraft carrier has docked in the Northeast Asian country in seven months.
For a long time, North Korea has always condemned joint military exercises between the US and South Korea as well as Washington's deployment of strategic assets to the Korean Peninsula.
