According to the Wall Street Journal, the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) has won the bid to build a nuclear power plant in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia, near the border of Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

In recent years, Saudi Arabia and China have announced a number of nuclear cooperation projects in Saudi Arabia, including a project to extract uranium from seawater, with the aim of helping the world's largest oil producer develop a nuclear energy program or become a uranium exporter.

In 2011, Saudi Arabia announced plans to build 16 nuclear power reactors over 25 years. The projects could cost as much as $80 billion. Nuclear power is essential for Saudi Arabia to meet its growing energy needs for electricity generation and water desalination, while reducing its dependence on depleting hydrocarbon resources.
