Serbia must be “well prepared” for all possible scenarios

The world is unstable and Serbia's security agencies must "be prepared for any possible scenario", Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said.

The longtime leader of the Western Balkan country has also repeatedly stressed that the Russia-Ukraine conflict is a crisis that could escalate into World War III.

Speaking at an awards ceremony for police officers on June 23, Mr. Vucic called on the Serbian Interior Ministry to ensure that “in Europe, no matter how difficult it is, every inch of Serbia must be safe.”

“We must think about our country and be well prepared for any possible situation,” the Serbian president said.

The Serbian President continued to call on the Serbian Interior Ministry to “prepare for a more difficult period, not because Serbia is in a difficult or bad situation… but because I know what is going to happen in the world, I know that the situation here will be much more difficult, so it is important to ensure that there are reserves and to prepare for this period”.

Since the Russia-Ukraine conflict began in 2022, Mr. Vucic has frequently made pessimistic predictions about its potential impact on global security. “I am afraid that there is very little time left for the war in Ukraine to end,” the Serbian leader told the Prva Srpska Televizija television network last month.

“In my opinion, things will get worse and worse and we may have a tragedy even greater than World War II. I fear that we are heading towards a major world conflict and very few people want to stop it.”

Mr Vucic, head of the former Yugoslav state that was bombed by NATO in 1999, has maintained friendly relations with Moscow since the start of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, despite Western pressure to force Belgrade to cut trade links with Russia and impose sanctions on the Eurasian giant.

President Vucic accused Western powers of trying to “blackmail” Serbia into supporting sanctions and of trying to stage a “colour revolution” against his government last December.

President Vucic's Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) won 85 out of 89 municipalities in local elections earlier this month and won an absolute majority in the new Serbian parliament following general elections in January.
