Hanoi 15 designs selected from 50 subjects and graduation projects of students of the University of Architecture were displayed at one of the largest shopping centers.
On the afternoon of January 20, the fashion event "Van Van and May May" took place at Lotte Department Store. Fifteen contemporary folk-style costumes were presented, conceived and created by 10 students from Hanoi Architectural University (HAU).
Mr. Nguyen Tri Dung, Deputy Head of the Faculty of Fine Arts Design, Hanoi Architectural University, said that this was the first time that the school’s students had coordinated to display and perform at a large shopping mall. This was an opportunity for students to bring their products to the community, as well as demonstrate their abilities and creativity.
According to Ms. Tran Tu Anh, Head of the Exhibition and Design Department of the shopping center, this is also the first time the unit has coordinated with students in the field of fashion. The sponsorship level for the show is estimated at about 400 million VND.
"I happened to come across the students' designs and saw that they had the same theme as the center's display and exhibition, so I invited them to participate," Ms. Tu Anh shared.

Nguyen Xuan Chuc, 21, a student of the Fashion class at the Hanoi University of Architecture, had a design in the show. Truc's product was a project in the Technical Costume Design subject, inspired by the weaving profession.
"When I was a child, I used to see my grandmother knitting, and this image also appeared in documentaries I watched. But now, I see that this profession has faded away so I want to talk about its beauty," Chuc said.
The female student said the hardest part of making the costume was attaching the accessories, made from bamboo strips, to the shirt. After several unsuccessful attempts with glue, Chuc decided to sew the accessories in place.
The special thing about the event is that the models will perform from the 3rd floor down to the lobby. Therefore, calculating how to move the models safely between floors is a challenge for the students, because the performance costumes have many complicated accessories.
Dao Ngoc Anh, Chuc’s classmate, said her design had a very long skirt and a stylized conical hat. To ensure safety, Ngoc Anh was forced to shorten the skirt.
Both students said they felt lucky that their products were chosen to participate in the event.
"I feel very proud to see many people inside and outside the center stopping to watch and take pictures. For a third-year student, this is a very valuable experience," Ngoc Anh said.
Mr. Dung assessed that the fact that design students in particular and art students in general create products with folk style is a good sign.
"With the development of the world , if schools, students and artists do not maintain and promote traditional culture, in the near future we may not see these elements anymore," said Mr. Dung.
With more than 20 years of experience in designing traditional costumes, Ms. Trinh Bich Thuy, Creative Director of Trinh Fashion brand, highly appreciates the efforts and potential of the students.
She believes that the selected products are unique compared to the general market, skillfully combining the beauty of traditional costumes and modern style.
"Performing at shopping malls is an opportunity that is not always available. This event and similar activities will help students gain more experience and exposure so that they can learn and develop their future careers," Ms. Thuy said.
Designs by students from Hanoi Architectural University are on display here until the end of February.
