Sinner vs Alcaraz is the new version of Federer and Nadal

The 2025 Wimbledon men's singles final between Jannik Sinner (Italy) and Carlos Alcaraz (Spain) will take place at 10pm tonight (July 13).

From their playing style, their records to their role in carrying a new generation, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner inevitably remind world tennis fans of the classic rivalry between Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer in the past.

Alcaraz is considered the “second” Nadal because of his persistent and explosive playing style. He grew up with a style strongly influenced by his fellow countryman idol.

Meanwhile, Sinner showed a calm appearance and elegant demeanor that was typical of Federer.

Even Sinner's hometown of San Candido in northern Italy is closer to neighboring Switzerland than the rest of the country. Which explains his "very Swiss" personality.

But the similarities don't stop at style. History seems to be repeating itself, as shown by the startling statistics.

Tonight's final makes them only the second pair in the Open Era to reach the finals of both Roland Garros and Wimbledon in the same year. The only others to do so before were Federer and Nadal, in three consecutive years from 2006-2008.

Their dominance also bears the shadow of the two legends who came before them. Regardless of who wins, this will be the seventh consecutive Grand Slam title shared by the two players.

And if either of them wins the upcoming US Open, they will repeat Federer and Nadal's achievement of winning all four Grand Slams in two calendar years (2006-2007).

More than just a match, Alcaraz and Sinner are carrying the weight of a new era on their shoulders. They are the faces men's tennis needs to capture the attention of a global audience, the way Federer and Nadal have elevated the sport .

Alcaraz himself happily acknowledged the role: "What we are doing is really great for tennis... I hope to continue doing well in the next five or 10 years, to bring our competition up to the level of the legends."

Sinner, with his usual modesty, was more circumspect: “You can’t compare what the Big Three have done over 15 years,” he said.

The five-and-a-half-hour Roland Garros 2025 final last month was a perfect example of the suffocating balance between them. Alcaraz came back from a goal down, but Sinner certainly won't be beaten again.

The two players have met 12 times in the past and Alcaraz has the upper hand with 8 wins and only 4 losses.
