South Korean chipmaker SK Hynix Inc. has risen to the No. 1 spot in the global market for Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM) for the first time in the first quarter, according to South Korea's Yonhap news agency.

According to data released by semiconductor industry analyst Counterpoint Research on April 9, SK Hynix accounted for 36% of the global DRAM market share in terms of sales, surpassing Samsung Electronics Co (34%) and Micron Technology Inc (25%). This is the first time SK Hynix has "overtaken" Samsung Electronics in DRAM market share on a quarterly basis.

Choi Jeong-ku, a researcher at Counterpoint Research, said SK Hynix achieved the feat thanks to strong revenue from its high-bandwidth memory (HBM) business. The company has responded well to the growing demand for DRAM, especially HBM products, marking a memorable milestone.

According to other data from corporate research firm Trend Force, Samsung Electronics led the DRAM market in the fourth quarter of last year with a market share of 39.3%, while SK Hynix held 36.6%.

SK Hynix leads the HBM market with its fifth-generation HBM3E products, driven by surging demand for AI computing. HBM plays a key role in graphics processing units (GPUs), a market largely dominated by Nvidia Corp. Counterpoint Research forecasts HBM demand to remain stable and less affected by U.S. tariffs in the near term as the AI sector grows rapidly.

However, the company warned that a broader economic downturn or a potential trade war could pose risks to HBM's growth./.
