The incident affected more than 400 people from 200 households in three areas. The victims included a Russian couple, a Myanmar national and several Thai nationals. Authorities are trying to identify the other victims.

Police said heavy rains that began at 2 a.m. on Aug. 23 triggered the landslide. Video shared on social media showed several houses destroyed and volunteers trying to clear the debris.

Rescue workers, military and volunteers have been deployed to provide supplies and help with clean-up efforts. The Thai government has also provided additional funding to support the victims and set up a team to investigate the cause of the incident.

Thailand is facing heavy rains during this year's rainy season, and climate change could make extreme weather events such as landslides and floods more frequent.
