Toothpick pierced the large intestine of a young man in Ninh Thuan

A 28-year-old man was admitted to the hospital with a dull pain in his right abdomen that lasted for several days. A CT scan revealed a foreign object, a 5.5cm toothpick, had penetrated the patient's cecum.

June 25, A representative of Ninh Thuan General Hospital said that doctors from the functional exploration department had just successfully performed emergency surgery on a patient with a perforated cecum (part of the large intestine) caused by a 5.5cm long toothpick (a type of bamboo toothpick).

Specifically, patient NH (28 years old) was admitted to the hospital with a dull pain in the right abdomen. The pain lasted for many days and was accompanied by fever.

CT scan results revealed a bamboo toothpick-shaped foreign object piercing the cecum wall, causing localized peritonitis.

Immediately afterwards, doctors from the functional exploration department performed a colonoscopy under anesthesia to remove the foreign object.

During the surgery, doctors removed a 5.5cm long bamboo toothpick without causing further damage to the patient.

Specialist Doctor 2 Le Thi Kim Thoa - Head of the Department of Functional Exploration at Ninh Thuan General Hospital - recommends that people should be careful in eating and drinking, and avoid the habit of holding toothpicks in their mouths after meals or while sleeping.

If you suspect you have swallowed a foreign object, you should immediately go to a medical facility for examination and timely treatment to avoid unnecessary complications.
