Two rockets hit al Asad air base in western Iraq, two Iraqi security sources said. It is not yet clear who was behind the attack.

CBS News quoted officials as saying that it appeared two Katyusha rockets were fired from a modified truck.

US President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have been briefed on the attack and have been reviewing steps to protect forces and respond to any attack in a manner and location of Washington's choosing.

Last week, the US also conducted a defensive airstrike in Iraq, targeting targets that Washington accused of being insurgents preparing to launch drones that threatened US and coalition forces.

There are currently about 2,500 US troops stationed in Iraq. Iraq has seen an escalation of retaliatory attacks since the Hamas-Israel conflict broke out last October.

The incident occurred amid concerns of escalating tensions in the Middle East after Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated in Iran last week.

On August 4, the White House said the US will deploy more warships and fighter jets to the Middle East.

In an interview with CBS 's Face the Nation , White House deputy national security adviser Jonathan Finer said the common goal is to reduce regional tensions and prevent possible attacks.
