According to The Verge , despite owning part or all of the shares of major game studios in the world such as Riot Games, Epic Games and many other companies, the giant Tencent seems to have not stopped its ambition to further expand its influence in the gaming industry.

Accordingly, Tencent is in the process of implementing a plan to add another studio to its long list of subsidiaries, the latest name being Techland, the studio that created the famous Dying Light action game series.

Tencent continues to acquire new game development studios

Techland CEO Pawel Marchewka announced the news, saying that the partnership with Tencent will be an opportunity for the developer to accelerate development and realize a broader vision for its games.

Techland is a Poland-based studio known for its zombie survival games, notably the Dying Light and Dead Island series. Last year, after a long delay, the studio released its highly anticipated sequel, Dying Light 2: Stay Human , to rave reviews.

Also in 2022, Techland experienced internal turmoil, with The Gamer reporting that 20 employees, about 5% of the company's workforce, left the company in just two months.

Speaking of Tencent, the conglomerate is one of the largest video game companies in the world, so it's no surprise that the company isn't shy about splashing cash to solidify its position at the top. Tencent's portfolio currently includes some of the world's highest-grossing games, including Honor of Kings , Call of Duty: Mobile , and PUBG Mobile .

While the Tencent deal may seem like good news for Techland, recent news shows that acquiring game studios doesn’t always pay off. Last month, Embracer Group, a Swedish company that owns a number of studios including Gearbox Entertainment and Crystal Dynamics, announced that it would be halting development on some games and selling off studios due to financial woes.
