VTC NewsVTC News04/01/2025

" The Thai team has prepared a penalty shootout plan with the Vietnamese team ," coach Ishii Masatada answered at a press conference before the second leg of the 2024 AFF Cup final.

Thailand lost 1-2 to Vietnam in the first leg of the final at Viet Tri Stadium ( Phu Tho province). The 2024 AFF Cup does not have an away goal rule. Therefore, if Thailand wants to turn the tables, they need to win by at least 2 goals. If Thailand only wins by 1 goal, the two teams will play extra time and may need a penalty shootout.

The Thai team actually faced quite a few disadvantages before the second leg of the final. They had to play a tense 120 minutes against the Philippines, then immediately travel to Vietnam, and then return to Thailand. The Vietnamese team played the second leg of the semi-final and the first leg of the final at home. Therefore, coach Kim Sang-sik and his team had the advantage of days off and travel conditions.

In the second leg, the Thai team was missing two injured players, Teerasak Poeiphimai and Akarapong Pumwisat. However, the Japanese coach did not care about this.

Mr. Ishii Masatada explained: " There is no disadvantage for us. I cannot say exactly about the lineup for tomorrow's match. But we have prepared the best for the match and everything is fine with the Thai team.

We don't know the exact status of his injury yet. But Akarapong, Peeradol and Weerathep are very important players for the Thai team. Hopefully Akarapong can recover well ."

According to the revelation from the captain of the Thai team - midfielder Peeradol Chamratsamee, the home team focused on physical recovery rather than professional preparation. Thailand only returned home on the evening of January 3, later than the time Vietnam left.

Midfielder Peeradol said: " We are ready for tomorrow's match. After the match with Vietnam, Coach Ishii encouraged us a lot and told us to be confident. The Thai team must overcome the mistakes they made. I hope the fans will come to the stadium with pride."
