(CLO) Thailand and China will jointly establish a coordination center to deal with rapidly growing telephone scam networks along Thailand's borders with Myanmar and Cambodia.
These scam centers often use trafficked workers to carry out online and telephone scams to steal victims' assets.
According to the United Nations, the Southeast Asian region, especially the border areas of Thailand, Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia, has become a hub for telecommunications and online fraud since the COVID-19 pandemic. Hundreds of thousands of people have been trafficked and forced to work in these fraud centers.

Thai police said on January 24 that a coordination center will be set up at the national police headquarters in Bangkok. Meanwhile, China also plans to set up a center in Mae Sot district, Tak province, Thailand, which borders Myawaddy in Myanmar, which is considered a hotbed of fraud.
"These centers will coordinate to investigate and dismantle fraud gangs operating in Myawaddy (Myanmar) and the Thai-Cambodian border area, where many Chinese and Thai nationals are involved," Thai police said. The center in Bangkok is expected to be operational in February 2025.
Public pressure in Thailand is mounting for the government to crack down harder on scam syndicates where defrauded workers from many different countries are treated cruelly.
On Tuesday, Chinese media reported that officials from China, Myanmar and Thailand also reached an agreement on eliminating fraud centers in Myanmar during a meeting in the Chinese city of Kunming.
This week, a Thai military delegation also met with Myanmar's Deputy Commander-in-Chief, General Soe Win, in the capital Naypyidaw to discuss measures to crack down on human trafficking and online fraud.
