Among the 20 people killed were 15 police officers and an Orthodox priest. Russian news agencies, citing the country's National Anti-Terrorism Committee, said that authorities had killed five gunmen.

The press service of the Russian Investigative Committee said that the identities of five people - believed to have carried out attacks on a synagogue, two Orthodox churches as well as traffic police stations in Derbent and Makhachkala - had been identified.

The agency is conducting a criminal investigation into the attack in Dagestan under three articles of the Russian Criminal Code: Article 205 on terrorist attacks; Clause 4, Article 222 on illegal purchase, storage and transportation of weapons; and Clause 4, Article 226 on the theft of guns.

In a video statement posted on Telegram , the head of the Republic of Dagestan Sergei Melikov said: "Today is a tragic day for Dagestan and all of Russia."

Authorities have information about the organization behind the attacks and their targets, he said, but did not provide further details. No organization or individual has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

The government of the Republic of Dagestan also declared a period of mourning from June 24-26, with flags flying at half-mast in government buildings and all entertainment activities canceled during this time.

On June 24, United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned "in the strongest terms" the terrorist attack that occurred in the Republic of Dagestan.

Mr. Guterres sent his condolences to the families of the victims, the people and the government of Russia, and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

Many world leaders have sent condolences to Russian President Vladimir Putin and the head of the Republic of Dagestan Sergei Melikov over the attack.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev both strongly condemned the terrorist act and expressed support for the fight against all forms and manifestations of terrorism.

Kazakhstan's leadership also offered to assist relevant Russian security agencies in investigating the attack.

Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov and Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev also sent condolences over the terrorist attack in the Republic of Dagestan.

Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Secretary General Zhang Ming also sent a message of condolences to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

According to a message posted on the Telegram channel of the SCO Secretariat, Mr. Truong Minh emphasized that terrorism cannot be tolerated and the fight against terrorism is one of the priorities of the SCO.

China also voiced its opposition to all forms of terrorism. "China condemns the brutal attacks on civilians and law enforcement officials in Russia's Dagestan," Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning said.
