World's tallest matchstick structure entered Guinness World Records

The Guardian newspaper on February 9 quoted Mr. Plaud describing a heart-stopping and emotional week, like riding a roller coaster, after receiving conflicting information from the Guinness World Records organization.

"For the past eight years, I have been pursuing the goal of creating the world's tallest structure made of matchsticks," said Mr. Plaud. Specifically, he spent 4,200 hours building a model of the Eiffel Tower from more than 706,000 matchsticks and 23 kg of glue.

However, Guinness World Records initially told the Frenchman that his 7.2-meter-tall structure was not eligible for record consideration, as he did not use commercially available matchsticks.

In fact, Mr. Plaud started the project with a regular match, and cut off the tip of the match.

After a while, he got tired of cutting off the match heads one by one, so he suggested buying match heads from the manufacturer.

That's why Guinness World Records initially refused to recognize his model.

However, after a period of consideration, Mr. Mark Mckinley, Director of Guinness World Records, expressed his joy at being able to award Mr. Plaud a certificate.

“We are pleased to be able to admit that we have been rigorous about the type of match used, and Mr Plaud’s efforts have been truly remarkable,” said Mr Mckinley.
