Seoul Mayor: South Korea Needs Nuclear Weapons

On October 18, Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon condemned "unacceptable threats " to the area under his jurisdiction, referring to recent comments by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

Earlier, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) released a photo showing the North Korean leader discussing a map of Seoul with a senior official.

Mayor Oh Se-hoon said he felt "angry " and "deeply disappointed " as he watched Pyongyang "continuously threaten " the city of Seoul.

"North Korea has been launching balloons filled with trash across the border with South Korea, causing property damage and fires in many places. Not long ago, they also dropped bombs right in front of the demilitarized zone and on the east coast," said Oh Se-hoon.

The mayor of Seoul added that North Korea dared to carry out "brazen and provocative actions" because it possesses nuclear weapons, while South Korea does not. This created an "imbalance" between the two sides.

“This is why we must urgently strengthen our nuclear deterrence. There is no other way to achieve peace than strengthening our defense,” Oh Se-hoon stressed.

Oh Se-hoon is one of the South Korean politicians who has spoken out in favor of Seoul having its own nuclear arsenal. However, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol has said that the country is not seeking to create its own nuclear weapons and has reiterated his commitment to redouble efforts to perfect its nuclear deterrence strategy with the United States, which has provided Seoul with a nuclear umbrella since the 1950s.

Tensions on the Korean peninsula have been heating up recently. Pyongyang blew up roads and railways on the common border between the two Koreas.

North Korea also accused South Korea of sending drones across the border to drop leaflets filled with "political propaganda and slander." Pyongyang also strongly condemned joint military exercises between South Korea and the United States, viewing them as preparations for a possible new war.
