Türkiye's Information and Communications Technology Authority (BTK) said on its website that "instagram.com has been blocked by a decision effective from August 2, 2024," without providing further details.

The move follows comments by Turkish presidential communications director Fahrettin Altun on July 31, in which he criticized the platform for blocking condolence posts over the killing of Ismail Haniyeh, a key leader of the militant group Hamas.

He accused the platform of "preventing people from posting messages of condolence for martyr Haniyeh".

Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of the Palestinian militant Islamist group Hamas and a close ally of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, was assassinated in Tehran, Iran, on July 31.

“This is censorship, pure and simple,” Altun said on social media platform X, adding that Instagram did not cite any policy violations for its actions.

There was no immediate comment from Instagram's parent company Meta about the ban or Mr. Altun's comments.

According to Turkish media, there are more than 50 million Instagram users registered in the country out of a total population of 85 million.

This is not the first time Turkish authorities have blocked access to social media sites. Wikipedia was blocked from April 2017 to January 2020 over two articles alleging links between the presidency and extremism.

In April, Facebook owner Meta suspended its social network Threads in Türkiye following a decision by the country's government to block information sharing with Instagram.
