(Dan Tri) - An exceptionally large flood at Ban Ve Hydropower Reservoir, with a flow of 12,800 m3/s, was recorded at 2:00 a.m. on July 23. By 11:00 a.m. on July 23, the water flow to the reservoir had decreased, reaching more than 5,400 m3/s.

Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN) has just updated information on the operation of Ban Ve Hydropower Reservoir ( Nghe An ). Citing information from Power Generation Corporation 1 (EVNGENCO1), EVN said that the flood started appearing at 4am on July 22 with a flow of 583m3/s, then increased rapidly to 1,500m3/s at 10am the same day, the water level of the reservoir was 189.69m.

At 4:00 p.m. the same day, the reservoir began to discharge flood control water at a flow rate of 508 m3/s through the spillway, combined with a discharge rate of 845 m3/s through the project. The water level of the reservoir at the same time was 191.23 m (the lowest flood level was 191.5 m).

At the peak flood point (2am on July 23), the flood in the lake reached its peak with a flow of 12,800m3/s. The total water discharge was 3,285m3/s, the lake reduced about 74% of the peak flood flow to reduce flooding downstream.

The power company said that flood reduction for downstream by retaining 74% of the peak flood flow at the hydroelectric reservoir caused the water level of the reservoir to increase rapidly, gradually switching the reservoir to an operating mode to ensure the safety of the project.

However, the downstream area is experiencing serious flooding, so the company has reported to the Chairman of Nghe An Provincial People's Committee, requesting to switch from the operation mode to ensure project safety to the abnormal operation mode to limit water discharge downstream, in order to continue to reduce flooding downstream. This is an exceptionally large flood, exceeding the frequency of the inspection flood (the inspection flood of Ban Ve Hydropower Project has a flow rate of 10,500m3/s).

Updates from EVN's hydropower reservoir water level monitoring system show that as of 11:00 a.m. on July 23, the water flow into Ban Ve hydropower reservoir reached 5,436 m3/s, the total discharge was 3,985 m3/s (6 surface discharge gates), the total discharge through the spillway was 3,646 m3/s, the discharge through the plant was 339 m3/s. The upstream water level was 200.17 m, 45 m higher than the dead water level.

Ban Ve Hydropower Plant is the largest hydropower project in Nghe An province and the North Central region, with a designed capacity of 320MW. The reservoir has a basin area of more than 8,700km2, spanning the communes of Luong Minh, Huu Khuong, Nhon Mai...

At around 24:00 on July 22, the Chairman of Nghe An Provincial People's Committee also signed and issued an urgent notice to localities and units regarding ensuring safety related to the flood discharge of Ban Ve Hydropower Reservoir.

Also on the morning of July 23, Mr. Tran Anh Tuan, Chairman of the People's Committee of Con Cuong Commune, Nghe An Province, said that the area was flooded due to heavy rain lasting for many hours. The water level of Lam River rose rapidly, approaching the historical flood peak recorded in 2018, causing many areas to be isolated, especially low-lying areas along National Highway 7.
