Reuters reported on December 1 that a senior Canadian official said Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had pledged to US President-elect Donald Trump that he would strengthen border controls between the two countries.
Canadian Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc, who attended the dinner between Mr. Trump and Mr. Trudeau in Florida (USA) on November 29, said the two sides discussed additional security measures that Ottawa will introduce.
“We will be looking to buy more drones, we will be looking to buy more police helicopters, we will be reassigning personnel. We believe the border is secure,” LeBlanc told CBC Canada.

“I think it’s important to show Canadians and Americans that we’re acting clearly and strongly and that’s exactly what we’re going to do,” LeBlanc added, promising to provide more details in the coming weeks.
The official said Canada still maintains that the tariffs would hurt both the US and Canada, given the economic ties between the two countries. Previously, Mr. Trump announced that he would impose a 25% tariff on Canada unless Ottawa takes measures to stop the flow of migrants and drug trafficking into the US. If the tariff increase becomes a reality, this would significantly affect the trade activities of Canada, which exports 75% of its goods to the US.
US President-elect Donald Trump said on November 30 that he had a “very productive” meeting with Mr. Trudeau. Mr. LeBlanc said that after dinner in Florida, Mr. Trump walked Mr. Trudeau to his car and said: “Stay in touch and call me anytime. See you soon.”
According to Reuters, the friendly meeting contrasted with Mr. Trump's harsh attacks on Mr. Trudeau, such as calling the Canadian prime minister a "far-left deranged person" in 2022 when Mr. Trudeau required truck drivers crossing the border to be vaccinated against Covid-19. In 2018, former President Trump left the Group of Seven (G7) summit in Quebec, Canada, saying Mr. Trudeau was "very dishonest and weak."
