Although the viral image has attracted public attention, it marks a significant change in Canadian politics , as former Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney has just won a convincing victory in the race to become leader of the ruling Liberal Party and will succeed Prime Minister Trudeau.

Mr Carney met Mr Trudeau on March 10 and said the formal transfer of power would be swift. "That transition will be smooth and swift," Mr Carney said after meeting Mr Trudeau.

The Trudeau era is over, Canada finds a replacement

Mr Trudeau will remain prime minister until Mr Carney officially takes over. Mr Carney is likely to officially become prime minister in the coming days, according to the Globe and Mail .

Before announcing his successor, Mr. Trudeau on March 10 highlighted the Liberal Party's "achievements" over the past decade. "I am incredibly proud of what we have done over the last 10 years for the middle class and those working to join it," Mr. Trudeau said at the Liberal Leadership Conference.

As the Liberals enter a new era, Mr Trudeau stressed that the party "has a responsibility to ensure that Canada remains the best country on earth".

Prime Minister Trudeau announced in January his intention to resign as prime minister and leader of the Liberal Party, saying the party was being distracted by infighting and that Canada deserved “a real choice” in the next election. Carney is expected to serve out the remainder of Trudeau’s term and Canada will hold a general election before October 20.
