During his historic visit to Hanoi from April 8-10, the trip marked the first time a Spanish Prime Minister set foot in Vietnam since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1977, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez had profound feelings and assessments about Vietnam's international position.
Spain's Europa Press news agency quoted Prime Minister Sánchez as emphasizing that Vietnam is a powerhouse in Asia, with an increasingly strong role in the international arena. Fifty years after the liberation of the South and national reunification, Vietnam has achieved stable and strong economic growth, averaging about 6% per year over the past two decades. According to the Spanish leader, this is an impressive figure.
Also according to Europa Press, at a joint press conference with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, Mr. Sánchez affirmed that Spain and the European Union (EU) are committed to pursuing a rules-based international trade system, supporting trade liberalization and economic openness.
Mr. Sánchez said Spain is building a new foreign policy strategy to strengthen relations with dynamic and important countries like Vietnam.
The visit yielded concrete results as the two sides signed a series of important documents, bringing bilateral relations to a new height. Most notably, the Joint Statement on upgrading bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, a landmark step after 47 years of cooperation. The accompanying agreements, covering everything from food security, political consultations to diplomacy, outlined a picture of multifaceted cooperation in the coming decade.
In particular, the new financial protocol on infrastructure development is expected to open up opportunities for Spanish businesses to participate in key projects in Vietnam.
With a longer-term vision, Madrid is building a strategy towards Southeast Asia, where Vietnam is identified as a key partner in the EU's foreign policy in the Indo-Pacific.
The Spanish Prime Minister expressed his wish to strengthen cooperation with Vietnam in multilateral forums and affirmed that Vietnam's strong economic growth is a positive example for the international community in the race towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)./.
