According to the announcement of the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs on October 8, Chinese Premier Li Qiang will visit Vietnam for three days, from October 12 to 14. The visit takes place at the invitation of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh. This is the first official visit to Vietnam by Chinese Premier Li Qiang in his new position. The last time a Chinese Premier visited Vietnam was in October 2013. Li Qiang's visit takes place in the context of the Vietnam-China comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership developing well. Notably, the exchange of delegations and high-level contacts are extremely vibrant. During the state visit of General Secretary and President To Lam to China in August 2024, the two sides issued a joint statement on further strengthening the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership and promoting the building of the Vietnam-China Community of Shared Future of strategic significance. During the visit, General Secretary and President To Lam held talks with General Secretary and President Xi Jinping, met with Chinese Premier Li Qiang, Chairman of the National People's Congress Zhao Leji, and Chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference Wang Huning. Previously, in December 2023, General Secretary and President of China Xi Jinping paid a state visit to Vietnam. The result of this visit was that the two sides agreed to build a Vietnam-China Community of Shared Future of Strategic Significance. In 2024, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh paid a working visit to China in June. The Chairman of the National Assembly also visited this country in April. Many visits and working sessions of Politburo members and Central Committee members of the two countries have also taken place in the past 10 months. This visit by Chinese Premier Li Qiang marked the first time he and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met in person in Vietnam. The trip also took place ahead of the two countries celebrating the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2025. At a meeting with Chinese Ambassador He Wei on October 1, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh asked the Chinese side to pay attention to promoting cooperation in building standard gauge railways connecting the two countries. The head of the Vietnamese Government also asked China to continue opening its market to Vietnamese agricultural products and promptly implement large-scale investment projects that represent China's development level in Vietnam. Economic, trade and investment cooperation between Vietnam and China has continuously deepened and become a bright spot in bilateral relations in recent times. China has continuously maintained its position as Vietnam's largest trading partner and Vietnam's second largest export market. In the opposite direction, Vietnam is China's largest trading partner in ASEAN and China's fifth largest trading partner in the world after the US, Japan, South Korea and Russia. This visit by Chinese Premier Li Qiang is expected to contribute to concretizing the common perception between senior leaders of the two Parties and two countries, promoting the implementation of high-level agreements reached in recent times.
