Promoting the development of Vietnamese language in Germany

On June 23, 2025, in the Federal Republic of Germany, the Vietnam - Germany Friendship Association (Association) had a working session with the Germany - Vietnam Friendship Association. At the meeting, the two sides also discussed their common aspirations in promoting the development of the Vietnamese language in Germany.

Mr. Rolf Schulze, Chairman of the Germany - Vietnam Friendship Association, introduced the outstanding activities of the Association, emphasizing the role of utilizing the extensive knowledge and practical experience of its members in advising German businesses and organizations on issues related to Vietnam.

Thereby, the Association contributes to strengthening and consolidating the solidarity and friendship between the two nations, while promoting bilateral cooperation in many fields such as culture, society, economy , scientific research, vocational training, environmental protection and digital transformation.

The President of the Germany-Vietnam Friendship Association also introduced important events that the Association will organize in 2025, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Specifically, the “Vietnam Symposium” will take place on June 25, 2025 in Berlin; in addition, a meeting with successful representatives of the second generation of Vietnamese people in Germany is expected to be held in Hamburg in September 2025.

Dr. Nguyen Toan Thang, Permanent Vice President of the Vietnam - Germany Friendship Association, gave an overview of the 40-year journey of formation and development of the Association. He emphasized that, with the motto of enhancing understanding and connection between the people of the two countries, the Association has continuously promoted cultural exchange activities, delegation exchanges, granted scholarships to students, organized seminars and meetings with German political institutes in Vietnam. In addition, the Association has also actively coordinated with organizations such as DAAD and GIZ to expand cooperation in the fields of culture, science, education, vocational training and labor export.

At the meeting, the two sides also discussed their common aspirations in promoting the development of the Vietnamese language in Germany, considering this an important lever to encourage higher education institutions in Germany, especially in Berlin, Frankfurt and Passau, to consider reopening the Vietnamese Language Department in their training systems.

In order to specify the cooperation orientations, the two Associations signed a document on international cooperation measures between the two sides, creating the foundation for the development of a Memorandum of Understanding on international cooperation, expected to be signed by the end of 2026.
