The government of Freiburg city in Baden-Württemberg state (Germany) has just officially adjusted the menu at kindergartens and elementary schools with the entire menu being vegetarian dishes.

Previously, meals for children in the city’s kindergartens and primary schools had two main menu options: meat and fish. According to the authorities, the decision to adjust the menu is to make school meals as healthy, sustainable and delicious as possible for all students and staff. The menu will be adjusted throughout the school year to better meet the characteristics of collective meals with different tastes.

The decision by the city of Freiburg has sparked a nationwide debate about proper nutrition for children. When the city council passed the decision last October, the Baden-Württemberg state ministry of agriculture disagreed, arguing that a balanced diet must include meat.

However, nutritionist Gertrud Winkler of Albstadt-Sigmaringen University (Germany) welcomed the "forward-looking" decision of the Freiburg city government.
