The opportunity to start a business came in 2019, when Ms. Nhan transferred a farm of more than 1,000 square meters . Ms. Nhan discussed with her husband about using all her savings and borrowing nearly 1 billion VND to invest in a pig farm. However, after nearly 3 months, the pigs were about to be sold when they got sick, causing the couple to lose hundreds of millions of VND.
Undaunted, she sought a new direction with the model of raising black chickens for eggs. In 2020, the couple continued to rent an additional 2,000m2 chicken farm to expand the scale of farming to a total of more than 3,000m2 and bought 3,000 black chickens to raise for eggs. To date, the farm has more than 5,000 chickens, harvesting more than 50,000 eggs per month, with a revenue of about 200 million VND.
What surprised us most was standing in front of the farm with more than 5,000 chickens in egg-laying season, but only hearing melodious music mixed with the sound of running water.
In addition, the chicken coop also has biological bedding to collect manure and make it easy to clean the coop. Ms. Nhan said that black chickens come from the wild, although they have been domesticated, they are still mentally unstable, often startled, bite each other, and refuse to eat, causing slow growth.
The couple decided to invest in a speaker system in the farm and play instrumental music all day long. The sound of running water is a misting system modeled after a steam fan to cool the chicken farm in the hot season. “In the summer, we have to use a cooling system, in the winter, we have to warm the chickens,” said Ms. Nhan.
Ms. Nhan shared that after having the product, the next difficulty was finding an outlet. She marketed it from markets, agents, and supermarkets. The basic advantage is that black chicken eggs are rich in nutrients, supplied daily locally, so the freshness of the eggs is maintained, and gradually customers trust her.
Currently, Hao Nhan branded black chicken eggs are consumed in many localities of Quang Nam, Da Nang , Quang Ngai, etc. In addition, chicken manure is used to sell to coffee garden owners in the Central Highlands provinces, also bringing in significant revenue. Currently, Hao Nhan black chicken eggs have been recognized as a 3-star OCOP product.
With her efforts, Ms. Pham Thi Nhan is honored to be the only representative of Quang Nam province to receive the Luong Dinh Cua award in 2024.
