Tiger Woods finishes near bottom of Hero World Challenge

VnExpressVnExpress04/12/2023

Bahamas "Super Tiger" continued to score even par in the final round, and finished 18th overall at the Hero World Challenge 2023 - the first tournament on the PGA Tour he played in eight months of hanging up his clubs.

The Hero World Challenge 2023 marks Woods' first tournament since he withdrew from the third round of the Masters major due to a relapse of plantar fasciitis in his right foot and underwent surgery in April. Prior to this setback, Woods had undergone at least 10 surgeries for professional injuries, five of which were in his left knee and the other in his back.

Woods' latest tournament took place in the Bahamas, with no eliminations and a prize fund of $4.5 million. There, he competed with 19 famous players on the PGA Tour, over four rounds of the Albany par-72 course and ended this morning, December 4, Hanoi time. In the end, Woods finished 18th with an even par score. The championship and $1 million prize went to Scottie Scheffler - the current world number one with a score of -20.

Looking at the final round scores alone, Woods also scored even par while Scheffler -4 and no bogeys. Each time Woods finished the previous three rounds, his maximum score only reached par. Throughout the tournament, the former American world number one scored 19 birdies, but had to make up for 15 bogeys and two double bogeys.

"It took me a long time to get back into the game. And throughout this tournament, I got rid of a lot of the rust in terms of strength and skill, played four rounds and found the joy of competing with my colleagues again. Those results were the best," Woods concluded before the Hero World Challenge ended.

That statement shows Woods is optimistic about his physical condition, as he is nearly 48 years old and full of injuries.

From 2024, the PGA Tour will wrap its season within the calendar year. Before the Hero World Challenge 2023, "Super Tiger" planned to compete once a month. After the tournament, that plan has not changed. "My body is sore. But next season, playing like that is reasonable because I will have two weeks to recover," Woods affirmed.
