TikTok platform has been continuously entangled in troubles in the Southeast Asian market recently.

On October 12, 2023, a spokesperson for the TikTok platform emailed Malaysian authorities, pledging to hold meetings with the Malaysian media regulator to demonstrate its proactiveness. The email stated: “TikTok respects local laws and regulations and is committed to taking proactive measures to address the issues raised.”

Earlier, Malaysian Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil publicly accused TikTok of not taking effective measures to curb defamatory or misleading content on its platform, adding that the social media company had failed to comply with several local laws, although he did not specify which laws were violated.

In a social media message posted after the meeting with TikTok representatives, Mr Fahmi Fadzil said TikTok should also address issues related to content distribution and advertising purchases following complaints from businesses, the public and Malaysian media outlets.

In recent months, Malaysia has begun to clamp down on online content related to race, religion and royalty.

Recently, the Chinese platform TikTok has come under a lot of pressure in the Southeast Asian market following Indonesia's decision to suspend transactions on the app following a ban on e-commerce activities on social networks and Vietnam's announcement of an investigation into harmful content on the app.
