US intelligence suspects allowing Ukraine to attack Russia with long-range missiles would "change the course of the conflict"

The New York Times (NYT) cited sources saying that US intelligence believes that allowing Ukraine to attack deep into Russian territory with long-range weapons made in the West would lead to retaliatory measures by Moscow against Washington and other allies. At the same time, US intelligence also doubts that the use of long-range missiles will change the situation of the conflict.

The NYT reported that Ukraine's armed forces currently have a limited number of Western long-range missiles and it is unclear how many more allies can provide.

In addition, according to US intelligence assessments, after the first attack, the Russian military could move ammunition depots, command posts and other important facilities out of range of long-range missiles, so they doubt the effectiveness of this method.

Among the retaliatory actions that Russia could take if restrictions on Ukraine are lifted, US intelligence cited arson and sabotage at facilities in European countries or “attacks on military bases” of allies, including the United States.

According to sources, it is still difficult to say what decision US President Joe Biden will make.

Russian President Vladimir Putin warned that allowing Ukraine to use long-range weapons to attack Russian territory would mean the United States and other NATO countries would directly enter a military conflict with Russia.
