This year's Vietnam Cultural Heritage Day (November 23) at Thanh Hoa Provincial Museum took place as usual, with a very touching part: Receiving donated artifacts from the people.
I have been in those donation spaces many times, and what I feel is the spirit that emanates from the donors. Among the donors, there are some familiar faces. They have stepped onto that donation platform more than once.
There was a question that kept running through my mind: why were those donors able to do what many others could not do? What did they do it for? Was it for the love of their heritage, or to make their names known to many people?
It was not until I observed closely and heard their plain words in the exchange that I had the answer.
Donating artifacts to them is a responsibility to the community, for the future of the heritage, not to be honored, rewarded, to stand on a high platform among many people to receive a certificate of recognition, and then hang it in the middle of the living room of their home.
Individuals who voluntarily donate artifacts are also donating material goods, because many artifacts are quite valuable if they are exchanged on the market. They are joining hands to promote cultural heritage to a higher value, and to make the museum a more attractive cultural institution and destination.
There is nothing special about the simple, honest faces of the donors, but above all, they always have a heart and love for heritage.
We all know that when antiques become more and more valuable, many people cling to them and let them “rot” at the bottom of their chests. This is clearly not just a normal donation, but an extraordinary donation. Only when people think about the community, will they do such a thing.
The law allows the purchase and sale of antiquities, especially museums are allowed to purchase artifacts for research and display purposes. However, if we only rely on planned budget funds, it will be difficult for museums to have the best number of artifacts for research and display purposes.
Thanh Hoa Museum has done a good job of awakening the responsibility and spirit of donating artifacts to the museum in recent years. That spirit needs to be improved to spread and multiply the spirit of donation in the community, so that artifacts can be promoted to their highest value.
