Tonight, Vietnamese people will not only see a bright comet with the naked eye but also witness the appearance of the largest and brightest supermoon of 2024. According to the Hanoi Astronomical Association (HAS), the time of the supermoon will be when the moon is on the opposite side of the earth because the sun and its face are fully illuminated.

The ideal time to watch this supermoon is when the moon rises, viewers can watch it from anywhere. Specifically, the moon will be full at 7:26 am US time (18:26 pm Hanoi time). The origin of the name " Hunter Moon" comes from the hunting of Native American tribes.

The time of year when the leaves are falling and the deer are fattening up is a good time to hunt. In the newly harvested fields, hunters can ride through the stubble and easily see foxes and other animals out foraging.

Not only that, this supermoon is also considered the roundest of 2024 because at this time the moon will reach perigee, the closest point to the Earth this year, at a distance of 357,174 km. This is the third supermoon out of 4 supermoons in 2024, notably this is also the moon at the closest distance to the Earth.

Although a full moon theoretically lasts only a moment, that moment is not perceptible to the naked eye. At the moment of full moon at perigee, or supermoon, the moon is about 14% larger and about 30% brighter than a full moon at aphelion (farthest point).

A supermoon is only about 7% larger and 16% brighter than an average full moon. Scientists also note that there will be four more supermoons to see later this year.

But the supermoon that will take place tonight, October 17, is predicted to be the most “amazing” yet. It promises not to disappoint us because the supermoon will bring a spectacular sight.
