On the afternoon of October 20, at the Presidential Palace, General Secretary, President To Lam, Commander-in-Chief of the People's Armed Forces, Chairman of the National Defense and Security Council, presented the decision to promote the rank from Senior Lieutenant General to General to Mr. Nguyen Tan Cuong, Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army (VPA), Deputy Minister of National Defense .

General Nguyen Tan Cuong, Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army, Deputy Minister of National Defense.

General Nguyen Tan Cuong was born in 1966; hometown Tien Ngoai commune, Duy Tien town, Ha Nam province; bachelor's degree in Military.

He is a member of the Party Central Committee of the 11th (alternate), 12th, and 13th terms; a member of the Central Military Commission, Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army, Deputy Minister of National Defense; and a delegate of the 15th National Assembly .

During his career, Mr. Nguyen Tan Cuong held many positions in the military.

He fought in Cambodia and worked for decades in the 1st Army Corps. At the 1st Army Corps, he held the positions of Deputy Commander and Chief of Staff of the Corps; and Corps Commander.

Since 2013, he has worked at Military Region 4, successively holding the positions of Deputy Commander and Chief of Staff of the Military Region; Commander of the Military Region.

In October 2018, he became Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army. At the end of 2019, he was appointed Deputy Minister of National Defense and promoted to the rank of Senior Lieutenant General (January 2021).

In June 2021, the President appointed Deputy Minister Nguyen Tan Cuong to hold the position of Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army.
