President Biden calls for respect for election results

“One thing I hope we can do is no matter who you vote for, let’s not see each other as opponents, let’s see each other as fellow Americans. Let’s lower the temperature,” said US President Joe Biden.

In a speech from the White House, Mr. Biden also said the result would "eradicate" doubts about the integrity of the US electoral system, which stemmed from Mr. Trump's refusal to acknowledge his own defeat to the Democratic Party in 2020.

Staff members stood up and cheered as President Biden arrived in the famed Rose Garden. Biden dropped out of the race against Trump in July and handed the Democratic nomination to Vice President Kamala Harris.

Mr. Biden called Mr. Trump to congratulate him and ensure a peaceful and orderly” transition. “On January 20, we will have a peaceful transfer of power in the United States,” Mr. Biden emphasized.

The outgoing president also urged supporters not to lose hope after the re-election of Mr. Trump, who is likely to dismantle many of Mr. Biden's policies as soon as he returns to the White House.

“Remember, failure does not mean we are defeated,” President Biden said.

Biden's comments are in stark contrast to billionaire Trump, whose denial of defeat in the election four years ago led to a violent attack on January 6, 2021, by Trump supporters on Capitol Hill.

Biden also invited Trump to the White House, their first meeting since the disastrous debate in June that forced President Biden to drop out of the race. Many world leaders have pledged to work with Trump.

Chinese President Xi Jinping said Beijing and Washington must find “harmony” in a message to Mr Trump, calling for “stable” bilateral relations.
