On June 22, speaking at a press conference with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the White House, President Joe Biden defended his comments: “I don’t think there are any real consequences to that comment.” Biden also expressed hope to meet President Xi Jinping “at some point in the near future.”

Chinese Ambassador to the US Xie Feng has protested President Biden's comments about President Xi Jinping, urging Washington to take immediate action to reverse the negative impact or face all consequences.

The Chinese Embassy in the US said he had “made stern representations and strong protests” to senior officials at the White House and the US State Department. “The Chinese government and people do not accept any political provocation aimed at China’s top leader and will resolutely oppose it… We demand that the US side immediately take sincere actions to reverse the negative impact and honor its own commitments,” the statement said.

For his part, on June 22, speaking about US President Joe Biden's recent criticism of Chinese President Xi Jinping ahead of his official visit to Beijing later this month, New Zealand Prime Minister Chris Hipkins said: "I disagree with that. The story of China's political system is a matter for the people of this country."
