(CLO) Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed concern and stressed the need to prevent Syria from becoming a haven for terrorists.

He also affirmed that the fight against the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK - an organization banned in Türkiye) and the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) terrorist organization must continue.

At a press conference after talks with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Erdogan said: "On Syria, we need to prevent this country from becoming a center of terrorism. The fight against IS and the PKK and its affiliates is one of the main topics discussed today."

He stressed that Türkiye is the only ally that has defeated both terrorist organizations. "We will definitely not let these organizations revive. The fight must continue," Erdogan added.

President Erdogan said that the Syrian people cannot shoulder the heavy responsibility of rebuilding the country and strengthening national security on their own.

"Syria's neighbors, friends and brotherly countries need to act quickly with the full support of the European Union (EU) and international organizations," Erdogan said, criticizing the international community for not providing enough support to Syria over the past 13 years of conflict and violence.

"Now we have the opportunity to make up for that shortcoming," he said. Erdogan revealed that Türkiye had reopened its embassy in the capital Damascus, marking a significant step forward in relations with Syria. He affirmed that Ankara would continue to support its "Syrian brothers" in the reconstruction phase.

According to Mr. Erdogan, rebuilding Syria requires not only large financial investments but also long-term commitments from neighboring countries and the international community.

Following the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime, Syria is facing many challenges in rebuilding the country, eradicating the remnants of war and strengthening security. As a country with a direct border with Syria, Türkiye plays an important role in controlling terrorist activities and providing humanitarian assistance to the Syrian people.
