President Trump sanctions the International Criminal Court

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên06/02/2025

US President Donald Trump has issued sanctions against the International Criminal Court (ICC) for its actions against the US and allies such as Israel.

CNN reported that on February 6, President Trump signed two executive orders targeting the ICC and anti-Christian bias.

In the first executive order, Mr. Trump imposed financial and visa sanctions on individuals and relatives who support ICC investigations into American and allied citizens.

Only USAID programs that prioritize U.S. interests will be maintained.

Last year, the ICC issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar for actions related to the Hamas-Israel conflict.

In January, the Republican-controlled US House of Representatives passed a bill to sanction the ICC, but Democrats in the Senate blocked the bill.

Trump’s sanctions include freezing the assets of those involved in the US and banning them and their families from entering the US, according to Reuters. This is not the first time he has sanctioned the ICC. In 2020, the leader also issued a similar ban on ICC officials investigating alleged war crimes by US soldiers in Afghanistan.

The ICC, which has 125 members (not the US), can prosecute individuals for war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide and crimes against the territory of member states. The court has taken steps to protect its staff from US financial sanctions by paying three months' salary in advance, according to Reuters. Late last year, ICC President Tomoko Akane warned that sanctions could quickly undermine the court's ability to operate in all situations and in all cases.

Also on February 6, Mr. Trump signed a second executive order against anti-Christian bias, appointing Attorney General Pam Bondi to lead a new task force to eliminate the practice.
