Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic on March 30 appointed Defense Minister Milos Vucevic as Prime Minister of the Balkan country and formed a new Government following parliamentary elections last December.

In a proposal submitted to the Serbian Parliament, President Vucic announced that after consulting with representatives of all electoral lists after the December 17, 2023 election, he decided to nominate Mr. Vucevic as a candidate for the position of the next Prime Minister of Serbia.

Mr. Vucevic, leader of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), has been serving concurrently as Serbia's defense minister and deputy prime minister since October 2022.

Before seeking parliamentary approval, Vucevic is expected to announce the list of his new Cabinet members and the new government's agenda. Ana Brnabic, who served as vice-chairwoman of the SNS and prime minister of Serbia for seven consecutive years, has just been appointed as the new speaker of the Serbian parliament .

President Vucic's coalition, led by the SNS Party, in power since 2012, won legislative elections last December with 46% of the vote and 129 seats in the 250-member parliament, securing a slim majority in the new Serbian parliament.

SNS's coalition partners welcomed the appointment of Mr. Vucevic as a logical and excellent choice, while the opposition believes that it will make no difference who becomes Prime Minister as long as Mr. Vucic remains President.

The opposition accused SNS of widespread voter fraud and organized large-scale protests. The Serbian government denied the allegations. According to Serbian regulations, the new parliament began its work on February 6 and must approve a new government within 90 days .
