UN Secretary-General to speak at SCO Summit

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will visit Central Asia from June 29 to July 7, with his first stop being Uzbekistan.

Mr. Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for the United Nations Secretary-General, confirmed that after Uzbekistan, Mr. Antonio Guterres will visit Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.

The last time Mr. Antonio Guterres visited this area was in 2017.

During his visit, the UN chief will meet with heads of state and other senior government officials. He will also visit climate change projects and engage with youth activists and local communities.

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is scheduled to speak at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Astana, Kazakhstan on July 4.

In his speech, the UN chief will “emphasize the need to reaffirm our shared commitment to multilateralism based on the UN Charter, international law and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, noting that the central goal of our multilateral system must be peace ,” said Stephane Dujarric.

In addition, Mr. Antonio Guterres will also emphasize that, “deep global divisions today are preventing countries from working together to address two serious emerging threats from climate change and digital technology”.

Established on June 15, 2001 in Shanghai (China), the SCO currently includes Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, China, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, India, Pakistan and Iran. According to SCO Secretary General Zhang Ming, the SCO Summit in July "will make a decision on Belarus' admission".
