After the competition day of July 2, the final qualifying round of the Porto (Portugal) 3-cushion billiards World Cup has ended.
This round of matches helped determine the final 18 players to participate in the round of 32, which is also the first main round of the tournament. Two of the 18 players mentioned above are Vietnamese players: Thon Viet Hoang Minh and Dao Van Ly.
Thus, the total number of Vietnamese players participating in the round of 32 has increased to 6. Previously, there were 4 people with tickets: Tran Quyet Chien, Tran Thanh Luc, Bao Phuong Vinh and Chiem Hong Thai.
The World Carom Federation (UMB) has also announced the groups for the round of 32. And once again, two teammates Tran Quyet Chien and Bao Phuong Vinh fell into the same group D.
This is a pretty tough group for the Porto World Cup, because the two remaining players, Peter Ceulemans (Belgium) and Nikos Polychro (Greece), are also not weak.
This is the second consecutive World Cup that Tran Quyet Chien and Bao Phuong Vinh are in the same group. Previously, at the World Cup in Ankara (Türkiye), they were also in the same group. Bao Phuong Vinh was the winner but both of them got tickets to continue.
This time Quyet Chien and Phuong Vinh are still highly rated in their group. But surprises can still happen in this group.
Another group with two Vietnamese players is group B. Thón Viết Hoàng Minh and Đào Văn Ly, who both qualified, immediately faced each other in the group stage. This group has former world number 1 and current world champion Cho Myung Woo (Korea). The other player is Rui Manuel Costa (Portugal), a player who is not too well-known.
In group C, Chiem Hong Thai is placed with strong players including Eddy Merckx, Ruben Legazpi, Jose Miguel Soares.
Meanwhile, Tran Thanh Luc is in group E with Jose Juan Garcia, Berkay Karakurt, Jeremy Bury.
