This weekend, Mexican female boxer Romina Castan (nicknamed La Bambita) was supposed to make her professional boxing debut. But the most interesting thing is that this girl is only… 12 years old. She is ranked in the atomweight division for boxers weighing around 46kg.

Romina Castan was set to break the Guinness World Record as the youngest boxer ever to compete professionally. But things didn't go as planned.

Knowing this, the World Boxing Council (WBC) had to intervene. They finally succeeded in preventing Romina Castan from competing.

Writing on social network X, WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman affirmed: "I am pleased to announce that 12-year-old boxer Romina Castan will not compete. The WBC will continue to guide her father, and will fully support her amateur career. At a more appropriate time, Castan will be promoted to professional."

Romina Castan's father is Isaac "Bamba" Castan, a former boxer who had around 50 amateur fights. Romina followed in his footsteps and started training at the age of 8. She has around 50 amateur wins to date and is confident about turning pro soon.

Mr. Sulaiman once shared the difficulty in convincing Isaac Castan to change his mind and not let his daughter compete professionally too soon. On Instagram, the WBC president said that the father even made many threats and challenges if anyone canceled the match.

It is known that a company called Tigre's Boxing Promotions is the organization that organized Romina Castan's debut match. This company is also the official representative of the Castan family. They sent thanks to the WBC for supporting the young boxer.

Romina Castan’s professional debut has sparked controversy. Many boxing fans have criticized the organizers for being too greedy for money and fame when organizing this match. Most commented that at the age of 12, competing professionally without protective gear could cause long-term damage.

In countries like the UK or the US, there are regulations requiring boxers to be at least 18 years old to compete professionally. However, in Mexico or Thailand, these regulations are often unclear. That is why Canelo Alvaraz made his professional debut at the age of 15. Later, he had an illustrious career when he unified all 4 major belts: WBC, WBO, IBF and WBA.
