Dr. Tran Thi Kim Ngoc, Medlatec General Hospital answered:

If children with high fever and convulsions due to flu are not treated properly, they may face many risks of complications such as: Effects on the brain; sleep disorders and other complications.

If you detect a child with a high fever or convulsions due to the flu, first, parents need to stay calm and monitor the temperature every 2-3 hours. If the child has a fever >38.5 degrees Celsius, give the child Paracetamol at a dose of 10-15mg/kg/time/rectal suppository, the second dose >4-5 hours after the first dose to reduce headache, muscle pain and fever.

Apply warm compresses to the child's armpits, groin, and forehead, loosen clothing, remove gloves and socks if any to reduce fever. Parents should place the child in a safe place, avoid letting the child fall or collide with hard objects, and place the child on his or her side to prevent choking when the child vomits.

Parents should also note the start and end times of the seizure; observe the child's skin color, breathing rate, and level of alertness.

Give your child enough water and electrolyte replacement according to the instructions of the doctor or manufacturer. Parents should try to encourage their children to drink water, fruit juice, coconut water, vegetable juice, milk... to avoid dehydration due to high fever.

During home monitoring, if the child shows the following symptoms, parents should take the child to a medical facility immediately: High fever, not responding to antipyretics; convulsions lasting more than 5 minutes; blue or purple skin; excessive crying; fever with rash; lethargic sleep, difficult to wake up.

After flu treatment, children who have had high fever and convulsions still need to be monitored for a few days to prevent and detect early signs of complications. If the child shows unusual symptoms, parents should notify the doctor for timely support.
